Novak Djokovic is the defending champion.[1] He is vying for a record-extending 25th major singles title, and to become the first man to complete a quadruple career Grand Slam.[2]

Djokovic and Jannik Sinner are in contention for ATP No. 1 singles ranking.[3][4] Djokovic must at least reach the final to have a chance at retaining the top ranking following Sinner's win in the first round. If Sinner reaches the semifinals, Djokovic will need to win the title and for Sinner not to reach the final in order to retain the No. 1 ranking.[5]

This was the first time since the 2005 Australian Open that Rafael Nadal was unseeded in a major, and the first time he was unseeded at the French Open. Nadal used an injury protected ranking to enter the tournament.[6] He lost to Alexander Zverev in the first round, marking the first time Nadal lost his opening match at the French Open,[7] and only the second time he lost his opening match at a clay court tournament since the 2008 Italian Open against Juan Carlos Ferrero. Zverev became only the third player ever to defeat Nadal at the French Open, after Robin Söderling (2009) and Djokovic (2015 and 2021).[8]
