The Bago University Students' Union (BUSU) (Burmese: ပဲခူးတက္ကသိုလ်ကျောင်းသားများသမဂ္ဂ) is a students' union at the Bago University, representing students across multiple departments. Each college of Bago University separately elects student representatives to the union.[1][2]

History[edit]

In 2015, the rector of Bago University banned BUSU members from taking their examinations if they wore white and black wristbands to protest the government's violent suppression of students striking in Letpadan, a town near the university.[3]

Since the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, the BUSU has opposed the State Administration Council military junta through in-person rallies and social media posts.[4][5] In the 9 April 2021 Bago massacre, at least 80 civilians, including BUSU members Ko Arkar Min Khant, a second-year zoology student, Ko Bo Bo Naing, a first-year zoology student, and Ko Kaung Kyaw Tun, a first-year mathematics student, were killed during the raids by the Myanmar Army and Myanmar Police Force.[6] Many BUSU members have been charged for civil disobedience, supporting the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, and inciting the people to disturb the peace of the nation.[7][8][9][10]
