Sanjaya Gunarathna (Sinhala: සංජය ගුණරත්න) is a Contemporary Artist in Sri Lanka. Also he is an award-winning professional Animator. His painting styles are abstract art, modern art, expressionism art.[1] [2][3][4]
Early life[edit]
Sanjaya Gunarathna was born on 18 January 1980 in Panadura, Sri Lanka. His father Priya Ranjan Gunarathna was a music teacher, and his mother Manel Silva was a dancing teacher. Sanjaya got the opportunity to grow up in a creative environment from his younger days. Sanjaya was influenced to become an artist by his grandfather Saldin Silva, a successful local artist. His sister Dhananji Gunarathna is an art teacher and brother Narendra Gunarathna is a musician.[5]
Education[edit]
Sanjaya obtained his primary education Thurstan College and secondary education from Nalanda College in Colombo. He was known among his friends during school days for his artistic abilities.[6]
After completing school, he began a three-year course in Traditional Art Work, led by the artist S.P. Charles. This course was offered by the Cultural Department collaboration with the Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka. This allowed him to experiment with life drawing, sculpture, and landscape drawing. Sanjaya graduated the course with a First Class Certificate as well. He was inspired by artists including Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo.[7]
Career[edit]
Upon completing formal education, Sanjaya joined an advertising agency as an intern. This advertising agency was managed by the artist Anura Srinath. Sanjaya then worked as an art director for the Sinhala teledrama The Next Generation.[8] Sanjaya then joined Samanala Creations as an animator, where he worked on the production of a Sinhala cartoon DVD named “Seeyage Katha”.[9] During this time, he experimented with drawing software and taught himself digital art techniques. In 2011, Sanjaya joined Sri Lanka Rupavahini (Television) Corporation of Sri Lanka as a 2D animation and graphic artist,[10] [11]where he contributed to several projects.[12][13]
Solo exhibitions[edit]
While working for numerous organizations, Gunarathna was experimenting with art on his own. This led him to organizing his first solo exhibition "Life without Green" at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre in Colombo, Sri Lanka in February 2023.[14][15][16][17]Through this exhibition, he was able to showcase his unique artistic vision as a contemporary artist.[18][19][20][21][22]
