notability[edit]

I have to say I don't think there's any value in this list. What is your motivation in creating it - and do you have the names of the rest of the women?--Elen of the Roads (talk) 14:12, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have no motivation except to create the list. I started writing Angela Berners-Wilson, however my reading indicated that she was not "first" any more than the others, due to the ordination being official at the final 'Amen' - I will find a source for that.
We have lists of bishops; as these women were the first to be given the highest post available to them, the list seems notable to me, even if the women are not all notable on their own. There is a lot of reliable sources about the group as a whole.
I am pulling together the list of the other women. Hopefully I will have time to return to this within a day or two.

Fair enough. I would counsel avoiding an edit war over the Amen thing - I suspect you won't be able to find a reference as the High Church believes your way, and the Low Church believes that the ordination takes place with the laying on of hands, not with the words, and I'll bet the C of E has fudged it so both sides can believe they are right.
I don't think I knew anyone in that group. I had been involved about 10 years before, and knew Sara Maitland and Liz Hurcombe, but had left that circle long before the ordinations were sanctioned.Elen of the Roads (talk) 23:58, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will avoid edit-warring; it sounds like this is more complicated than I first thought. Thanks for alerting me to this. John Vandenberg (chat) 04:59, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The list is half completed. John Vandenberg (chat) 14:07, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Other 1994 ordinations[edit]

There was another ordination of women at Birmingham Cathedral in May, and a less reliable source indicates another occurred in Greater Manchester in the month of April[1], but I havent been able to confirm that.

Bernadette Hingley was ordained in 1994, and gave her first sermon in May 22 1994[2] According to her Oct 25, 1995 obituary in The Times, she was ordained at Birmingham in May.

There is a list of "Womens 1sts" on web.ukonline.co.uk, and some of them appear very similar to a similar list in March-April 2007 publication (5MB) for International Women's Month; related names are:

  • Gillian Lurie [3] (no mention of 1994)
  • Carol Edwards Ladies 1st - C (one of the Bristol 32)
  • Rosemary Anderson [4] (Greater Manchester, in April)
  • Miriam Byrne [5]

This list of contenders for the first bishop has many listed as being ordained in 1994.
