September 2019[edit]

There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. Requested username:

Request reason:

To Whom It May Concern, I am sorry that I was wrong in my approach to editing my friend's wikipedia. Mr. Terry Carter is 91 and asked me to help him make some corrections. I do this as a friend and not as a company and am receiving no compensation for my time. Northern Star Productions is my travel agency but it is only me but I am happy to change my username. I am not really sure what is ok as this is my first time editing here. Would Cabindream1234 be ok? I hope this works. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Accept reason:

I will remove the block based on your pledge to refrain from directly editing about Mr. Carter and use edit requests instead. If you have any questions about doing so, or anything else, please ask either one of us that has commented here, or at the Teahouse or Help Desk. 331dot (talk) 17:54, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Cabindream"(note the caps) is already taken, you will need to choose something else. I have reformatted your request above to be a proper request; please edit it to remove "CabinDream" and replace it with a new choice. 331dot (talk) 07:14, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Even if you are not paid, you still have a conflict of interest since you are editing at Mr. Carter's request. Please review that policy and explain how your future edits will conform to it, as well as describe any other subjects you are interested in editing about. 331dot (talk) 07:16, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry - not sure I am doing this correctly. Would Cabindream1234 be ok? . As for edits, I have read the conflict of interest page. I am confused how Wiki content can be accurate if one or one's friends can not make edits, whether it is on their behalf or not. I am happy to abide by the rules, I'm just asking questions so I can understand them and edit correctly if and when I am allowed to. Thank you for your time and consideration — Preceding unsigned comment added by NorthernStarProductions (talkcontribs)
I have performed the rename. Wikipedia much prefers independent editors unconnected with a subject to summarize what independent reliable sources state about subjects. COI editors should not edit relevant articles directly as it compromises the neutral point of view expected of articles. Connected editors are often too close to the subject to be able to see that. 331dot (talk) 14:00, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello 331dot - Thank you for the name change. I am still confused about how information can be correct if people involved can't make changes, even if they are from reliable sources, but I promise to abide by your rules and not make any further edits on Mr. Carter's page nor any other anyone else I am directly related to. That said, if I see something that is wrong or out of date on page, how do I go about getting it corrected? Thank you for your time.

You may make edit requests on the article talk page, detailing the changes you want to see, for other editors to review. Are there also any other subjects you are interested in editing about? 331dot (talk) 18:09, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Great - I will look to see where edit requests is and go from there. Is there a way to get a better picture of Mr. Carter, like the one that is used in his IMDB page? https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0141956 And no, at this time, there arent really any other subjects I am compelled to edit and if I do, I will only go in via the edit requests avenue so as not to send up any more red flags. Thank you
  • Orangemike, is there anything you would like to see for an unblock here? 331dot (talk) 09:23, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • Looks good-faith to me. By the way, Dream, Carter is more likely to have access to a photo than anybody else, but the trap is likely to be licensing from the photographer (not the subject). --Orange Mike | Talk 17:45, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
      • If you have met Mr. Carter physically, he could permit you to photograph him, which would be a little bit easier from a licensing standpoint to upload. You may wish to read this about image uploads for more information. 331dot (talk) 17:57, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will add that you may want to be familiar with WP:COIADVICE, which describes the direct edits you are permitted to make in COI related articles(though you should make a note of COI in the edit summary or on the article talk page). 331dot (talk) 18:02, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you for unblocking me. Mr. Carter is a very dear friend of mine. He is 91 years old and not the most computer savvy person. He does have a professional photo that has the name of the photographer on it. Would that work? If so, how do I go about uploading it? I thought I read somewhere that I can not upload anything until I have done 10 other edits. I really have no other other topics I am interested or knowledgeable enough about to make those edits. Thank you for your time and assistance.
Posts to talk pages like this one(or the article talk page) count as edits, so you already have 7 edits. Once you get 3 more edits and wait another 48 hours or so, you will be autoconfirmed. Regarding the image, the photographer would need to release the rights to the photo under a license that permits it to be used on Wikipedia(which usually means that it can be reproduced by anyone for any purpose with attribution) Uploading images is not an area where I am an expert, but WP:IMAGE describes policy in this area while WP:UPIMAGE describes the process. 331dot (talk) 18:18, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information. I am still feeling a bit flummoxed by it all but I will do my best to post the right things and the right photos. Thank you for your time and patience. Have a good day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:6C3:4000:34A0:C88C:1255:2752:8786 (talk) 13:30, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Make sure you are logged in when you edit, so your edits are properly attributed to your account. 331dot (talk) 13:49, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops! Ugh! So much to learn! Thank you.
