Meelar: I saw your message but this was the way that i found easiest to give you the two points as to why I keep taking out the line that you keep putting in about terry mcauliffe. i worked at the dnc while terry mcauliffe was chairman and 2 points come to mind especially: 1) howard dean said that if terry mcauliffe was going to run as chairman again he, howard dean, would not have. i think that is a clear endorsement of terry mcauliffe's work as chairman. 2) in a national journal hotline poll, that came out right before terry mcauliffe's term finished at the dnc in 2005, members of the dnc gave terry an approval rating of over 90%. Thank you.

Civil Liberties[edit]

By the definition of “Civil Liberties” I can see how if you selectively subscribe to court rulings of just the past century you may contend the Second Amendment is not included in “Civil Liberties”, that is to say a liberty enjoyed by individuals. But the most recent circuit court ruling states:


“Miller’s definition of the “Militia,” then, offers further support for the individual right interpretation of the Second Amendment. Attempting to draw a line between the ownership and use of “Arms” for private purposes and the ownership and use of “Arms” for militia purposes would have been an extremely silly exercise on the part of the First Congress if indeed the very survival of the militia depended on men who would bring their commonplace, private arms with them to muster. A ban on the use and ownership of weapons for private purposes, if allowed, would undoubtedly have had a deleterious, if not catastrophic, effect on the readiness of the militia for action. We do not see how one could believe that the First Congress, when crafting the Second Amendment, would have engaged in drawing such a foolish and impractical distinction, and we think the Miller Court recognized as much.

To summarize, we conclude that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. That right existed prior to the formation of the new government under the Constitution and was premised on the private use of arms for activities such as hunting and self-defense, the latter being understood as resistance to either private lawlessness or the depredations of a tyrannical government (or a threat from abroad). In addition, the right to keep and bear arms had the important and salutary civic purpose of helping to preserve the citizen militia. The civic purpose was also a political expedient for the Federalists in the First Congress as it served, in part, to placate their Antifederalist opponents. The individual right facilitated militia service by ensuring that citizens would not be barred from keeping the arms they would need when called forth for militia duty. Despite the importance of the Second Amendment’s civic purpose, however, the activities it protects are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual’s enjoyment of the right contingent upon his or her continued or intermittent enrollment in the militia.”

If you still contend that the Second Amendment is not a “Civil Liberty” then let us examine the phrase. It is the combination of two words:

Civil: “Of, relating to, or befitting a citizen or citizens.” and Liberty: “The condition of being free from restriction or control.”


Now let us examine the vernacular surrounding this topic, in particular the phrase “Gun Control”. This phrase refers to the control, expressed in laws exerted over the people. It in no way refers to actions that solely affect inanimate objects, but instead, laws that define legal and illegal “actions” of people. Now we test the definition of “Gun Control” by asking: Do these laws affect (“Civil”) “Of, relating to, or befitting a citizen or citizens.” and do they also affect (“Liberty”) “The condition of being free from restriction or control.” The outcome of this test is clear.


The United States Department of Justice has recently adopted the individual right model. See Op. Those not for “Civil Liberties” can wordsmith all day long and try to selectively redefine the term “the People” as found in The Second Amendment, as passed by the House and Senate and later ratified by the States, but you cannot “alter the essential nature of an act or a thing”.


Those not for “Civil Liberties” can attempt “Gun Control” by taxation or other hidden methods but they cannot “alter the essential nature of an act or a thing”.

If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. Advice needed about preferences resetting[edit]

Hello Meelar, I am writing you because you welcomed me here some 3,5 years ago. I have not been very active here lately because I am busy with a wiki that we managed to run with colleagues from the ecological NGO where I work: Neotrópicos, we are a very small group and for the time being we have no WikiSysop, therefore my request for help. Today I tried to change the skin in the preferences panel. I had standard and changed to Monobook but it did not work. I got the following message: "Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class SkinMonoBook in /home/vhosts/wiki.neotropicos.org/public_html/mediawiki-1.4.0/skins/MonoBookNvo.php on line 33". Is there an easy way for a user to change back his preferences? The usual way does not work because as soon as I sign in I got the above cited message. Could you give me a hand? If not could you recommend someone who can? I truly appreciate your help. Our wiki requires ID and password to edit, I could supply one if needed. Thank you. Scarab[edit]

Hello! I saw that you'd put up the photo of the scarab and I was wondering if it was yours or not. I have one of my own, but I really have no idea how legitimate it is. Up until now, I couldn't find anything that even remotely resembled it until this picture and I've started to wonder if it's really the real thing. Even so, 550BC is really late for the egyptian period and if anything I think that what I have would be from around there since the styles seem similar. Thanks for editing the page without removin the new content (e.g. the photo) that I added under a different IP, or removing the additional fish I added to the list. While me adding an original photo and listing fish that I actually saw while swimming in it would seem pretty damn logical to me, usually I get people deleting stuff wildly for what seems to me to be hysterical reasons. Featured List of the Day Experiment[edit]

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. Asking for your help (and permission)[edit]

Hi. I have one question. It is about question for admin candidates that you created ([2]).

This is a long time ago, and it eventually made it into Japanese Wikipedia, where people used it (with translation and modification) as one of the questions for admin candidates, as well as Bureaucrat and CheckUser candidates. As a Japanese Wikipedian, I thank you for your contribution to Japanese Wikipedia. :-)

Now the problem is that it turned out that your contribution was not properly attributed, although GFDL requires certain form of attribution. And your contribution was used (with translation and sometimes modification) through a template and "subst:" which apparently is not within the scope of GFDL's permission.

Some Japanese Wikipedians took notice and have been discussing what to do.

I am wondering if you are so kind as to allow us to keep benefiting from your contribution. That means not deleting all the pages with the translated (and modified in some cases) question, although they lack proper attribution to you as an original author. It also means that we might use the question for some templates with the subst: method.

I recognize that you dedicate many of your textual contributions to the public domain. And it might apply to this question as well. But technically speaking, you first posted the question to a talk page, which you specify as exempted from the public domain dedication. So I thought I should better ask your opinion than rely on my own guess.

Please let me know if you need more details for any part of this. And thank you very much for your attention!

Michael Tippett[edit]

The inclusion of Michael Tippett in the directory was rejected on the basis of notability and yet Mr. Tippett is the subject of numerous media reports and is the founder of NowPublic (which does have a wikipedia entry). Wikipedia Loves Art! (February 27)

The Smithsonian American Art Museum will be holding a Wikipedia Loves Art! meetup on Friday, February 27 from 5-7 pm in the Kogod Courtyard. This is a photography event involving Wikipedians, along with Flickr users and others, to generate content for Wikipedia. Come share your experiences, meet the other teams, and take some photos! Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

Wikipedia Campus Ambassador?[edit]

Hi there, I'm LiAnna Davis, the communications associate for the Wikimedia Foundation's new Public Policy Initiative. We are currently looking for dedicated Wikipedians near the George Washington University and Georgetown University areas to serve as Campus Ambassadors, and I hope you might be interested.

Volunteer Campus Ambassadors will provide face-to-face training and support for professors and students on Wikipedia-related skills, such as how to create new articles, how to add images, how the talk pages work, etc. If you're especially enthusiastic and know people on campus, you can set up Wikipedia-related student groups and organize "Welcome to Wikipedia" social events.

The estimated time commitment for this role is 3-5 hours a week, possibly slightly more at the very beginning and very end of the semester. Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup![edit]

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.
