On Sunday, July 10, 1932, an 18-inning baseball game was played at League Park in Cleveland. The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Cleveland Indians 18–17 in a Major League Baseball (MLB) game that set a number of records. Johnny Burnett of the Indians set a MLB record with nine hits in a game. Cleveland's 33 hits and the combined number of hits by the two teams (58) are also MLB records for one game. Pitcher Eddie Rommel secured the win for the Athletics over Cleveland's Wes Ferrell, supported by three home runs by Jimmie Foxx. Philadelphia had taken only two pitchers on the one-game road trip to Cleveland, necessitated because Sunday baseball was still illegal in Pennsylvania. After Philadelphia's Lew Krausse gave up three runs in the first inning, Rommel pitched an American League record 17 innings in relief. The 29 hits allowed by Rommel are a MLB record, as are the 14 runs allowed by a winning pitcher. This was the 171st victory of Rommel's career; he never won another game. (Full article...)
